The organizers of the Austin, Texas-based Fantastic Fest have announced this year’s opening night film is director Robert Rodriguez’s action sequel Machete Kills, which will receive its world premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline location on September 19. Rodriguez will be attending the screening with stars Danny Trejo and Alex Vega.
“Every year we compile our dream targets for opening night film; Machete Kills was at the top of that list,” said Fantastic Fest co-founder & creative director Tim League in a statement. “We are going to pull out all the stops to ensure Robert’s world premiere red carpet experience is literally blood red.”
In the film, Trejo plays the titular ex-Federale agent, who is recruited by the president of the United States to take down an eccentric billionaire arms dealer. Machete Kills also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror, Mel Gibson, and a certain “Carlos Estevez.” The movie will be released on October 4.
